Since the theme of Hertford Carnival was “Festival of Nations,” the Society decided to take part. So a small group of us met at Sainsbury’s car park in anticipation. There were eight of us who danced, Barbara Manning who played her violin and two strong members who brought up the rear by holding the Society’s banner.

The weather was in everyone’s favour: the sun shone and the wind swept away any dark clouds.

The carnival procession proved to be very popular after a break of 12 years with 34 groups participating. We were near the back between Wheatcroft school float and some Shire horses!!

We danced our way through the streets from Hartham to Mead Lane ably led by Kerry and to Barbara’s wonderful music. We managed to incorporate many movements including reels of four across, casting, four hands round and promenades. Whenever the procession came to a holt, we dances eight hands round and back, once round some bollards!!!

We were all amazed at the numbers of people lining the streets, all waving and cheering. There was a lovely, friendly atmosphere with everyone enjoying the occasion.

We finally arrived at Mead Lane and some of us retraced our steps to the Castle grounds to enjoy the many stalls and entertainment there which included more wonderful sounds from the Wildeshausen Band.

Thank you to everyone who took part.

Anne

Ronnie was an active Scottish dancer in many clubs in the area and served
on the SEHSCDS commitee. There will be a memorial service for Ronnie at
3pm on Monday 15 August in St Mary’s Church, Newport (near Bishops
Stortford). Ronnie requested no sombre colours and for men to wear kilts.
She will be sadly missed by all who knew her and those who had the pleasure to
dance with her.

Sybil and Keith had been staying with Keith’s brother and his wife in Annan. There was a private family funeral in Scotland.

Keith has been an active member of the society for a number of years holding several posts, including those of president and chairman. In recent years Keith has been our web-master creating our first web site and promoting Scottish country dancing both in the society and in the wider community. We will be very sad not to see him at the ball and dances. Our sympathy is with Sybil at this sad time.

We are well into the Spring term and continue to have a good turn out every week. It is good to see two new dancers this term – Teresa and Catherine. It was also good to see Douglas and Carol for a number of weeks. it was a pity that the main reason for their return from Spain was a water leak during the cold weather in their house in the UK. Carol has returned to Spain while Douglas completes the renovation supervision.

We are lucky to have a number of excellent teachers, and this term Ian stood in for Sybil for a couple of classes. Also Sheila will be with us on the 15th March and 17th May. Thanks to all our teachers for making classes so enjoyable.

Classes continue at Bengeo School, with the exception of 15th March, which will be at the Baptist Church in Hertford.

Keep Dancing

Saturday was the SEHSCDS Annual Ball. A great chance to meet with old friends and to dance to the Ian Robertson band.

With much trepidation we all set off for the dance as this was the first time in the new venue at the de Havilland’s club Comet suite. After dealing with the tricky navigation to get to the car park where sat-nav users found they were taken to the bus only entrance, we were met by John Brace and Michael Vigurs. Everyone had taken the opportunity to dress up for the occasion and any concerns about the new venue were soon forgotten. We were all encouraged onto the floor by the uplifting tunes played by Ian Robertson and his band. In the light and airy hall there was plenty of space to dance to the traditional Scottish tunes we recognized as well as some more modern tunes given the Scottish dance twist. The evening was a delightful mix of old and new dances. We were guided through the evening by Sybil and Sheila taking turns to MC. It was nice to see dancers from around Britain as well as those that dance regularly with the club. Looking forward to seeing you all next year.
