1st February 2017

After all the Christmas dances and festivities, January has slipped by, but the fabulous New Year Ball hosted by Harrow Caledonian Society (http://www.harrowscottish.org.uk) deserves a mention. Over 100 dancers enjoyed dancing to Frank Reid; several SEHSCDS members were among them.

An equally convivial time was had at Gerrards Cross Tea Dance (http://www.gxscottish.org) on Sunday 22nd January. Three SEHSCDS members attended and thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon. We must confess to stealing their idea and after a very successful tea dance last year, SEH are hosting another one on 26th February, live music and dancing for everyone. Do please put the date in your diaries and come along to Riverside Hall in Ware at 2pm, all are welcome and the programme is very easy with all dances walked and talked through so your non-dancing family and friends can join in. The cost is just £2.00 for the afternoon – tea and cake included! (Further details are in the events section).

Dance Classes are running every Tuesday at Hollybush School in Hertford, I attended my first one this year last night and enjoyed learning some dances that are coming up on our Valentine’s Dance programme on Friday 10th February. Thanks to Ian and Sybil for a pleasurable evening.

The Ceillidh Team put on a superb programme for a Masonic Burns Evening on 21st January with demonstration country dances, ‘joining in’ ceilidh dances and Highland and Ladies Step demonstrations. Live music for the dancing was played by Barbara and Catriona played a violin solo. The entertainment was well received by the Masons and the team are getting ready for another evening this Saturday. Thanks to Emma for putting together the programme and to Ian and Emma for hosting the practice.

Aly Bain and Phil Cunningham  – 6th April 2016

A near capacity audience turned out to listen to the superb music of Aly and Phil at the Stables, Milton Keynes. We booked out tickets some 3 months ago to ensure we got good seats!  Harrow Caledonian Society had a party of 31 at the concert. This was the fourth time we have been to Aly and Phil and all I can says is that it gets better every time! Can’t wait to book our tickets for next year.

MUD Club – 21st March 2016

Twelve dancers attended Peter Dixon’s MUD (More Unusual Dances) club travelling from as far away as Richmond in Surrey to learn / try some fabulous but less commonly danced dances. I particularly enjoyed learning Celtic Reels for the dance Bonavista (most of the other dancers knew this formation) and the strathspey Far North Queensland.

Watford and West Herts Scottish Society Caledonian Ball – 19th March 2016

Eight members of SEHSCDS joined eighty plus other scottish dancers at Watford and West Herts Caledonian Ball held in the cavernous Allum Hall in Elstree. The music was provided by Sandy Nixon and his four of his band including Ian Robertson. It was a delight to have five superb musicians playing who affably agreed to many encores.

Where has the last month gone?

Gosh! Where has the last month gone?

For me, a plethora of haggis and Burns Suppers, all different, some with Dancing, some without but all a fantastic tribute to the Scottish bard. At Northwood Golf Club, the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Robert Burns was one of the erudite speakers invited to entertain at Harrow Caledonian Society’s Burns Supper.

SEHSCDS committee have met and discussed amongst other things our Ball on 26th November. It will be at a different venue this year  with the phenomenal Marian Anderson and her band coming from Scotland to play for us.

Our Friday Night Dance on 12th February had a  Valentine’s theme with pink bubbly served with the heart shaped refreshments and an appropriately chosen  programme  including the dance ‘The Valentine’. It was well attended and as always extremely pleasing to welcome friends from neighbouring dance groups.

Ten members from SEHSCDS attended Berkhamsted Strathspey and Reel Club’s 64th Highland Ball early in February dancing to Robert Whitehead and The Danelaw Band. 140 tickets were sold for this ball and the impressive hall at Ashlyns School easily accommodated us all. The hot supper was delicious and a time to chat with friends we often only have time to exchange pleasantries with!

Tuesday classes have been well attended, with the new(ish) format proving to be popular. Classes continue until 22nd March after which there will be a three week break for Easter

MUD Club (More Unusual Dances) met on the Monday evening in February half term to try out some super dances chosen and expertly directed by Peter Dixon. I’m sure a few of them will be creeping into our dance programmes soon.

Monday 18th January 2016 -MUD Club

The MUD (More Unusual Dances) Club organised by Peter Dixon saw 11 experienced dancers turning up on a cold January night to learn / try some great ‘different’ dances sourced by Peter. It was fabulous being able to dance the 5 couple dance ‘We’ve Nae Electric’ from the Jubilee Book 1929-2004 along with 12 other dances.

Sunday 17th January 2016 – Gerrards Cross Tea Dance

What a great idea, dancing on a cold wintry afternoon to Ken Martlew and Barbara Manning – about 60 plus dancers turned out despite the snow in the morning – what a good idea – 2 members of South East Herts ventured to it – and thought it was great. Perhaps something we could try at South East Herts – thoughts?

Tuesday 12th January 2016 – SEHSCDS Tuesday Class
